It’s a nightmare unfortunately come true.
On Saturday, Feb. 2, a fire engulfed 33 DeWolf Street, in the heart of New Bedford’s Ward 3 off Durfee Street. It was the home of the Pedrieria family.
That’s right across the street from where Beth Santos-Fauteux lives. Beth is the co-founder, with Steven Froias, of NBW3, a budding neighborhood action group promoted by New Bedford Now.
Which means one thing: It’s time to act!
Beth stepped right up – and writes about how we can all help the Pedrieria family with some immediate needs. Here’s what Beth wrote on Sun. Feb. 3:
“Yesterday, my neighbors tragically lost everything in a massive fire that turned from smoke to massive flames in literally minutes. Thankfully, every person was able to get outside. The brave New Bedford firefighters responded quickly, and saved their dog Lulu as well.
“Myself and Jarynette Gonzalez took second grader, Benjamin inside my home to take his attention away from the reality that every possession he and his family had had was being burnt to a crisp. We consoled him, as he was worried about his book report – due that Monday. It had been burnt in the fire. We promised him we would do whatever we could to help.
“We can all do that. They lost all of their clothing and furniture. So, we are asking for donations of clothes, shoes, furniture, toiletries, basic home necessities, gift cards – anything is helpful.
“We are looking for boy’s size 14-16, men’s size Medium shirts, 32/30 pants, women’s size medium shirts, 8-10 and 10-12 in pants, shoe size boy’s 8, men’s 10.5, and women’s 6 and 8.5 in shoes – and any other donations that will help this family rebuild and recover some of what they lost.
“Also, any leads on apartments for rent would be helpful.
“You can email me at email@example.com or text 5083710279 with any donations. Donations can also be dropped off at Destination Soups, 149 Union St. New Bedford. All donations will go directly to the Pedrieria family to help them rebuild after this tragic fire.”
